He keeps pulling me back in... 2009-09-22 00:00:00I don't want to talk about Jack Thompson. I really don't.
People are sick of his antics, and desperate cries for attention, and consider anything he does "old hat" and tired. I'm told that giving him even thetiniest bit of attention makes him stronger and eventually impossible to destroy without the help of a virgin reading from some old Sumerian text.
Which we all know is next to impossible to find. (The virgin, not the text.)
And so.. I've ignored him and his antics (mostly), and through all of the Manhunt II controversy and ESRB debates that are going on - I've taken the higher road, turned a blind eye, and pretty much not given into the temptation to report on whatever wacky thing Jack Thompson is doing to get Mommy and Daddy Media to notice him.
That was until he tried to subpoena someone to speak on his behalf at his up and coming bar trial. See, Jack Thompson is thiiiiiiis close to losing his license and being banished forever to "The Phantom Zone" where he will no longer be able to cause harm to the rest of the world.
So desperate times call for desperate measure, and Jack knows it is time to pull out any big guns he has left in his arsenal.
In the past Jack hasn't been afraid to ta...

I still haven't stepped back into World of Warcraft, though the lure is growing. The good folks at Turbine were kind enough to send me an invite to the Lord of the Rings beta (random, not because of my position here at TTH). When I receive a beta invite I tend to "test" rather than play. It's a double-edged sword as it ruins my ability to review the game in the future, but does allow me a glimpse into the minds of the development team as I watch what aspects of their title receive attention during the pre-release final building phase. What a team is concerned about during this phase tells much about what direction a game will take post-release.
LotRO is already a more polished game than many titles are at release. It has a certain World of Warcraft flavour blended with the spice of its Lord of the Rings background. The more you relate your play to the deep Lord of the Rings atmosphere the more you enjoy the game itself.
Ah yes, World of Warcraft. What would a MMOG article be without mention of WoW? I plan to head back and experience TBC. I played through the Blood Elf and Draenei starting areas with a couple of characters, but I never made it to outlands.
As I waited for TBC to be released was concerned that never being in a raiding guild I wouldn't be an effective group member or soloer for that matter in the expansion. How could I compete with players who had spent hundreds of hours raiding?
The answer: I don't have to. Blizzard upped the quality of the gear so much in the expansion that those hundreds of hours spent raiding were rendered mostly obsolete. I will be able to pop into the Outlands and loot gear on par or better than that worn by the Uber guild folks.
Is this fair to the raiders? It's probably not, but that said, it doesn't really matter. The expansion wasn't created for those players. It was created to bring back players who had unsubscribed. If those players can't compet...
Philips 19" Widescreen LCD HDTV: Perfect for Small2009-09-16 00:00:00I do like games myself, though I tend to stick to older ones because I have older game systems (and I'm kind of old.) I like to play the Diablo series, Half-Life, World of Warcraft, Age of Empires, the Thief series, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Resident Evil and even some text-based MUD's.
I've played games for a long time, and there are times that I get so involved that it probably is unhealthy and there are other times that I personally think they help me work out some repressed irritation or anger and do me some real good. Sometimes when I've had a terrible day, there is no...
Roleplay Roll-Call2009-09-10 00:00:00As the last days of 2007 pass by, I've been reflecting on the grand MMORPG adventures I have experienced this year through the eyes of my characters. It is my experience that solid roleplayers tend to have more than a few characters on tap, and will generally work to upkeep two or three characters fresh and in play. I could point to fellow roleplayers I've met this year alone who fit neatly into this mold, but to be more precise, I'll use myself as the best example I know.
I've said before that I do not completely understand how or why players get bored with their characters or their current MMORPG. One of the ways I keep my game time fun is by playing and developing a variety of characters through four different MMORPGs: Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft, Ultima Online and Anarchy Online. Counting all the characters I've made in all those games, I have seventeen total. Of course, I don't play every single one all the time, there are not enough hours in the day. I do pay particular attention to a few of them at a time, with that time revolving around which ones have the most interesting story or potential for adventure.
By having a number of distinct characters readily available, each with...
